"Didn't work well. Blue & gray system." MP
S&T #171 On to Moscow
---------------------
"Gem. Here's one of those relatively obscure wars (though GMT has a
game on it: Lion of the North). Very playable and intuitive. Very hard for
the Swedes to win." DM
"Interesting:
I was involved in the playtesting on this one and remember that it
was pretty much impossible for the Swedes to LOSE, perhaps they took
our suggestions too far...
When we were playtesting (using the historic setup) we went through
all the available options to the Russians and the best Swede response,
in each case the Russians had an abysmal chance of surviving the first
battle much less winning.
The options we considered for the Russians were fighting a siege
battle as the defender, running away, fighting in the open, splitting
up, attacking, and a couple others I don't remember.
It's been a long time since those playtests however and I don't own
a copy of the finished product, so I can't look up and see if any
changes were made." PB
S&T #172 Molotov's War
----------------------
"I liked it, had fun dissecting it but there was some significant map and
counter errata according to Leif Snellman." DM
"No interest. I think this one started the annoying DG habit
of using iconic counters for 20th century operational/strategic
games. Bleah." MS
S&T #173 30 Years' War
----------------------
"Not too historical at all, but I found it fun to play. There's a wonderful
article in Paper Wars dissecting this game." DM
S&T #174 Indo-Pakistani Wars
----------------------------
"An interesting look at this undersimm'd war." DM
S&T #175 Germania
-----------------
"Gem. Not the best of the bunch. I enjoyed discussing it w/ Markus and
tinkering with it." DM
"This is probably the easiest entry into the Ancient Wars
series. No campaign game, moderately sized scenarios, and,
finally, clearly presented rules. I liked it a lot, although
I'm more likely to return to RCW or Trajan." MS
S&T #176 Blood on the Tigris
----------------------------
"Some signif. errata and rules ques. but an interesting game." DM
"Very interesting game. Unfortunately it was severely hampered
by DG's new "slash and burn" (TM) approach to the design of
simple games. Folks, simply leaving rules sections out will
not give you the elegance of a Ben Knight game no matter how
much you cut (one should think they'd have learned from the
Medwar series). Perry Moore kindly sent me his list of
errata/omissions, but combined with a badly developed game
playing becomes a chore. Could have been a true gem, but as
it stands, it's a so-so game kept afloat by the interesting
situation. Graphics not bad (and the map really looks like
a mudflat), but (pet peeve) counters annoying due to lack of
clear divisional affiliation markings." MS
S&T #177 100 Years War
----------------------
"In the same flavor as 30YW. I enjoy it as a game." DM
"After playing things like Empire of the Middle Ages, this just didn't
measure up. Ugly map." MP
S&T #178 First Blood: Guadalcanal
---------------------------------
"Dare I say it: Dud. Apparently changed significantly from Chester's game.
Low counter density." DM
"The next victim of the "slash and burn" approach. Still works and
OOB is fixed over the original version, but after some playing I now
agree with Chester that the game probably lost something in the
simplification process. No competition for the 3W Henderson Field
game." MS
S&T #179 First Afghan War 1839-42
---------------------------------
"Gem. I really like this game. Excellent treatment of the time / subject." DM
