S&T #110 Hastings: 1066
-------------------------
"Too hard to be fun." MP
"I think of it as something like a prototype for those LIM games
that Mr. Berg has done. It was hard to follow the rules, but I
think the game itself is ok. Neither gem nor dud." JB
"A bit complicated, but I think it's one of those games that needs
to grow on you. I'll have to pull it out again." TES
S&T #111 Korea, the Mobile War
-------------------------
"Too ugly to be fun. Also somewhat convoluted rules." MP
"Played once and liked it." TES
S&T #112 Patton Goes to War
-------------------------
"The VvB Battles for North Africa series that we've talked about
several times. It's not a gem or a dud, but I think it's more
gemish than dudish. I will say that one of the things that I just
find somehow irksome in this system is the fact that, if I'm reading
the rules correctly, the phasing player allocates his defensive
artillery fire in his own phase *before* the opponent has moved or
designated his attacks. The system has only 12 hour turns, so maybe
this is an accurate representation of artillery doctrine. But at
the subjective "feel" level, it just doesn't feel right, and so I
ditch that rule in whatever game from this system I play. That is,
I treat the artillery's defensive capability just like "final
protective fire" in those SPI quad games." JB

S&T #115 Kanev

"A good game in the classic wargaming mode. I thought the giant
paratrooper on the map was a stupid waste of space, but others have
said that they really liked it." DAV
"Best of the '3W' S&T's." WS
"A Peoples War reprint with MacGowan graphics including a masterpiece
of socialist realist art, the giant heroic soviet paratrooper on the
map. The para & charts take up about half the map sheet (full size).
Also a good game, a fun situation, river crossing with paras landing
amongst the panzers. A gem." SG
"Gem, this a great game and a great system." DW
"I've got this one. Liked it, but since I prefer games on strategic
level, it mostly pleased me because I've learnt something about that
attack on which I didn't know much before. I suppose it's correct
from the historical/simulation point of view. Gaming part is somewhat
classic and of an average appealing. In short, nice but nothing
special, from my point of view." NS
"Out of 335 games in my collection (did an actual count following
the %played thread)...Kanev is in my top 20, easily. A great little
game in both editions, though I prefer the S&T. Kanev ranks a solid
A." WS
"The gem of the bunch imo. Like some other posters, I thought the
drawing of the big Russian soldier was a waste of space and made the
game look juvenile. But it plays great, and it's a tense
situation." JB
"Gem." TES
S&T #116 Manchu
-------------------------
"I played only a few turns of this. It was ok, but not a gem or a
dud. It didn't make my pulse race. I didn't look forward to playing
it after the first few turns. I put it away." JB
"I liked it, but then again, I like Bergian quirkiness." TES
S&T #117 North German Plain
-------------------------
"Just came too late. Also, didn't match the rest of the system
which I had painstakingly gathered for years." MP
"It had some appeal for me--I have this in second place in this
decade after Kanev. It was a pretty simple system, which I later
wrote a few "house rules" for Basically it amounted to treating this
game like an SCS game—I think I used the CRT from Yom Kippur).
However, I thought it was pretty good fun without any fixing
up." JB
"Never got into it. I was actually looking forward to the friction
point system and got something else." TES
S&T #118 The Tigers are Burning
-------------------------
"Played it. system was pretty good. Didn't see how the Germans
could win." MP
"The Tigers are Burning was a neat little mini-game, but haven't
gone back to it a lot. It ranks a B-." WS
S&T #119 Horse Soldiers
-------------------------
"I like GBACW, so I liked this although the first incarnation of the
TCT had its problems. Scenarios were small and manageable. (I'm
hoping I'm not confusing this with any other GBACW game! ;-))" TES
